Eagles Fall to Covenant in Series Opener After Taking Early Lead

STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
LAFAYETTE, Ga.--- The Asbury baseball team (7-26, 1-15 CCS) fell in game one of their final regular season series on Friday afternoon in Lafayette, Ga., 14-4, after leading the Covenant Scots (17-20, 3-13 CCS) into the sixth inning.

Asbury sophomore engineering mathematics major Ryan Yates got the nod from head coach Manny Cervantes in the first game of the series, going the first five innings with only four hits and two runs with three strikeouts.

The first at-bat of the game was an Asbury junior Quinn Nobles home run over the right field wall, 1-0. AU scored another in the first on an Andrew Billington infield single to score Kaden Dugle, 2-0.

Covenant used three consecutive hits in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 2-2. The Scots only had two hits over the next four innings against Yates.

AU graduate student Kaden Dugle's offensive power struck in the second, hitting a ground-rule double to score Ryder Bunfill and send Cam Weaver to third, 3-2. Aaron Beaman drove in Weaver to put AU up two, 4-2.

The game changed in the bottom of the sixth, when Covenant had three consecutive hits followed by a walk, error, and then fourth hit of the inning to score three runs and take the lead, 5-4. The Scots went on to score three more runs after sophomore Brady Robeson came on the mound for Yates, 8-4.

In the bottom of the seventh, Covenant used four hits and five free passes to score six runs and end the game early in seven innings, 14-4.

Covenant out-hit Asbury 13-9 in the game, which was 8-4 Asbury in total hits before the sixth inning. The Eagles committed two errors while Covenant had one fielding mistake.

STORY - QUOTE
"You give a ton of credit to Covenant for responding after we had a strong start. We had a really good five innings of baseball today, but weren't able to finish the job."
Manny Cervantes | Asbury Head Coach
