WILMORE, Ky--- On Saturday Asbury softball (18-12, 7-7 CCS) welcome the No. 15 ranked team in the latest National College Athletics Association (NCAA) Division-III softball coaches poll, Belhaven University(28-7, 14-2 CCS) falling short in both games 10-5 and 6-3.
Abigail Moffat and
Emma Popplewell each homered in game one, Moffat slashing her fifth of the year and Popplewell collecting her first. Each had two hits for game one, bringing in a total three out of the five RBI's for the game.
Kaitlyn Wilson and
Moira Tinsley led the offensive charge in game two with two hits apiece. Tinsley added an RBI, while Wilson scored a run. Sophomore
Emily Zink aided the efforts with a double leading to two RBI.
Josie Deatherage pitched six innings over both games allowing just four hits and two earned runs while earning five strikeouts.
Kaylee Strunk started game two in the circle going 5.2 innings, striking out four.
Game One | BELHAVEN 10, ASBURY 5
Belhaven struck with the first eight runs of the game over the first three innings of action. Scoring two in each the first and the second, and following up with a four run third inning to strech the game to an 8-0 advantage.
Asbury's offense responded with a
Kaitlyn Wilson RBI double to score
Abigail Moffat from first, netting their first run of the game in the bottom half of the third.
The Blazers posted their last two runs of the game in the fifth off a RBI single and a passed ball, pushing the score to 10-1.
The Eagles responded with two in the bottom of the fifth,
Abigail Moffat mashed her tied team-leading fifth homerun as
Moira Tinsley drove in
Kaitlyn Wilson on a sacrifice fly making things 10-3.
The last offensive push came in the bottom of the seventh,
Emma Popplewell lifted her first homerun of the year scoring
Daegan Flamm. Asbury fell to the Blazers after that, 10-5.
Josie Deatherage pitched 4.2 innings allowing just one earned run and striking out five.
Belhaven had 10 runs on 12 hits and three errors, Asbury posted five runs on seven hits, and two errors.
Game Two | BELHAVEN 6, ASBURY 3
Both teams had offense in the first inning, Belhaven posting one run in the top half and Asbury responding with two in the bottom half. Sophomore
Emily Zink slashed a two-RBI double to score
Natalie Ison and
Abigail Moffat and take a 2-1 lead.
Moira Tinsley tacked on to the AU lead with an RBI-single in the third to score
Kaitlyn Wilson and lead 3-1.
The Blazers struck with offense in the fourth and sixth innings, blasting a solo shot in the fourth and collecting a two-RBI double and two-run homerun, grabbing a 6-3 advantage into the last two offensive opportunities for AU.
Daegan Flamm and
Emma Popplewell both had hits in the sixth, but could not come around to score and keep it still, 6-3. The Eagles went down in order in the seventh as Belhaven grabbed the come from behind CCS doubleheader.
Belhaven scored six runs, six hits, and one error. Asbury scored three runs on eight hits and three errors.
Asbury falls to 18-12 and 7-7 in the CCS as No. 15 Belhaven improved to 28-7 and 14-2 in the conference.
