WILMORE, Ky.--- Asbury baseball (0-4) sophomores
Aaron Beaman and
Josh McNulty each had three hits against No. 1 NCAA DIII ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (3-0) on Saturday afternoon in Wilmore, Ky., but the Eagles were edged 6-3 by the Warhawks in game three of the series.
Asbury took a 1-0 lead over Wisconsin-Whitewater (UWW) in the bottom of the first on a Beaman double that scored junior
Andrew Billington. The Warhawks answered in the top of the second with three runs on two hits, going ahead 3-1.
Sophomore
Ryan Yates got the start for AU, going 5.0 innings with seven hits and five earned runs. Freshman left-hander
Evan McClain came out of the bullpen for the Eagles to provide 4.0 innings with no earned runs and three strikeouts.
UWW added two in the fifth and were then stalled until an unearned run in the top of the ninth. Asbury added two more runs in the sixth to narrow the deficit to 5-3, powered by singles from Beaman and McNulty.
The Eagles threatened in the seventh and ninth, before being thrown out stealing third and hitting a hard ground ball right at the shortstop for a double play to end the game.
Asbury out-hit the No. 1 team in the country, 10-7, but committed three errors while UWW was flawless on defense.
UWW took all three games of the series for the first-ever meeting between the two NCAA Division III programs.
"Our team battled today, and we were able to put ourselves in some really quality chances to win this game. Wisconsin-Whitewater is one of the top NCAA Division III programs in the country, and it was fun to battle with them on our home field."
Manny Cervantes | Asbury Baseball Head Coach

The Eagles will travel to Richmond, In., on Tuesday to play at Earlham College at 5 pm.
