Combs Buzzer-Beating Three Lifts Asbury Over Wittenberg, 59-57

STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio. --- Asbury men's basketball (2-10, 0-0 CCS) junior finance major Jonathan Combs' game-winning three-pointer lifted the Eagles over Wittenberg University (9-2, 2-0 NCAC), 59-57, on Tuesday afternoon in Springfield, Ohio, for the second consecutive Asbury win. 

Wittenberg made 1-2 free throws with 18 seconds remaining to take a 57-56 lead over AU, before Combs drilled the game-winning three-pointer with one second remaining on the clock, 59-57. Combs went 8-12 from the field in the game for 20 points with three made three-pointers, eight rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. 

The Tigers led by 12 after the first half, 37-25, making four threes and shooting 13-25 from the field. Asbury outscored Wittenberg 34-20 in the second half, going 13-30 from the field with eight threes to complete the comeback. 

AU trailed by 14 with 13:13 to go, 46-32, and then went on a 24-10 run to tie the game at 56-56. Asbury leads the all-time series over Wittenberg, 2-0, after defeating the Tigers last season in Wilmore in overtime, 77-76.

Combs is averaging 21.7 points and nine rebounds in his last three games. Junior Luke Imfeld also made three three-pointers, reaching 14 points on the day. Jordan Lewis scored 10 points with three rebounds, two assists, and two steals for Asbury. 

Wittenberg won the rebounding battle, 33-25, and outshot Asbury in field goal percentage, 44% to 37.5%. The Eagles used 10 made threes compared to the Wittenberg five threes. Asbury has now made double-digit three-pointers in their last six contests.

AU also played strong defense, tying a season-high 13 steals while forcing Wittenberg into 17 giveaways. Asbury used the steals to score 15 points off turnovers.
