Fleshood's Late Goal Not Enough; Asbury Slips at Berea

STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
RICHMOND, Ky.--- Asbury men's soccer (2-1) suffered their first loss of the 2024 season on Saturday night in Richmond, Ky., against Berea College (1-2-1) despit a strong late effort, 2-1.

The match began with Berea taking an early lead, and by halftime, the score stood at 1-0 in favor of Berea. After just under 70 minutes of scoreless play later, Tomas Gonzaga scored for Berea in the 71st minute to put the Mountaineers ahead 2-0.

Asbury's Dalton Fleshood managed to get the Eagles on the board with a penalty at 88:03, but Berea was able to hold on to their lead for the win.

Asbury's performance featured noteworthy efforts from players like Nick Eller, who led the team with five shots, landing two on goal. However, the Eagles couldn't capitalize on a crucial moment when they earned a free kick just outside the box in the dying seconds of the match.

The game also saw a red card issued to Berea's Andres Hernandez at 87:50, adding to the match's intensity.

"It was a tough one to take. We put ourselves in good spots but at the end of the day we weren't clinical enough. We look to keep improving and to make things right against Muskingum," commented Assistant Coach Noah Welch reflecting on the match's outcome.

Asbury's goalkeeping duties were handled by Crosby Short and Eris Acosta for Berea.

Looking ahead, the Eagles are set to face Muskingum University on September 11, 2024, in New Concord, Ohio, hoping to improve their record which currently stands at 2 wins, 1 loss, and 0 draws in the season.
