Asbury Knocks off No. 23 Centre; VandeSchraaf Sets School-Record with 28 Kills

STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
DANVILLE, Ky.--- The Asbury volleyball team (5-4) knocked off No. 23 Centre College (9-4) with a reverse sweep on Tuesday night in Danville, Ky., behind freshman equine science major Isabelle VandeSchraaf's school-record 28 kills alongside 16 digs.

Facing a tough start, the Eagles lost the first set narrowly at 25-20 and were overwhelmed in the second set with a score of 25-10. Centre hit at .270 and .400 in the opening sets and had only seven errors.

Despite early setbacks, Asbury demonstrated resilience by winning the next three sets: 25-22, 25-16, and an impressive 15-8 in the final set, securing their win. The Eagles finished the match on a 40-24 run to beat the Top-25 Colonels.

VandeSchraaf's 28 kills passes former record holder Lizzy Rempel, who had 27 kills for Asbury volleyball on November 1, 2018. The 16 digs added by VandeSchraaf with her 28 kills marks the fourth double-double of her freshman season out of nine matches.

AU junior media communication major Riley McChord led the Eagles with 19 digs, her third time this season with more than 15 digs. Emma Grace Gray contributed universally with nine kills, 10 digs, and an ace. Asbury's offense began clicking in the third set and didn't slow down, hitting .220 or better in the final three sets.

Team dynamics were supported by high assists numbers from sisters Lucy Kate Gray and Sara Beth Gray, who provided 23 and 20 assists respectively. Sara Beth's 20 assist mark a career-high for her while fellow freshman Abigail Bruner marked a career-high as well with four blocks.

Asbury is preparing for their CCS opener against LaGrange College on Saturday in LaGrange, Ga., aiming to continue their momentum.
