WILMORE, Ky.--- The Asbury men's soccer team (1-0) began their season with a solid 3-0 win against Heidelberg University (0-1) on Saturday afternoon in Wilmore, Ky.
The Eagles jumped to an early lead with a goal within the first five minutes and never let go, despite the challenging hot and humid conditions, underscoring their readiness for the 2024 season.
The scoring opened with a goal by sophomore marketing major
Salat Kipterit, set up beautifully by MBA student
Austin Dunlap, setting the tone for the day. Kipterit's goal, not only the first of the match but also the game-winning strike and first of the season for AU.
Sophomore sport management major
Jason Flaming and senior sport management student
Nick Eller continued the momentum, each adding a goal to ensure a comfortable lead before halftime which remained unchanged through the second half.
Flaming, apart from scoring, contributed with an assist, and junior marketing major
Crosby Short, the Eagles' goalkeeper, along with the defense, achieved a clean sheet, adding to the team's confidence. Short's performance was pivotal in keeping Heidelberg off the scoreboard and contributed significantly to the team's overall success.
Reflecting on opening day,
Austin Dunlap mentioned, "We really clicked early offensively today. This is a very fun team to be a part of and I am looking forward this season."
The Eagles are scheduled to face Mount St. Joseph next on Wednesday night at 7 pm on the Asbury Soccer Field, hoping to build on this start.
