Asbury Makes 12 Three's to Beat Fontbonne, 85-83, in Zweifel-Pritchett Classic

STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
WILMORE, Ky.--- The Asbury men's basketball team (1-3, 0-0 CCS) earned their first win of the season on Saturday night in the Zweifel Pritchett Classic behind 12 three-pointers to beat Fontbonne University, 85-83, in Wilmore, Ky.

The Eagles made 12 three-pointers for the second time already this season, after making 12 in the season-opener at Centre. Asbury senior sport management major Ben McNew scored a season-high 26 points on 9-15 shooting, including four made three's. 

Graduate Student Clayton Winter also had a season-high in points at 17 for AU, also grabbing eight rebounds with six assists and three steals. Winter now has 33 points in the last two games. 

Cam Jones added 15 points for the Eagles with three made three's and also dished six assists. Sophomore Jonathan Combs had eight boards and also scored 14 points. 

The Griffins led 46-43 at the end of the first half after making seven three's in the half. Charles Nelson scored 32 points with six rebounds for Fontbonne. 

Asbury scored 43 in the first half and 42 in the second for their highest scoring game this season. AU scored 15 fast break points compared to Fontbonne's six, and also outscored the Griffins 13-5 in second chance points. 

The Eagles dished 19 assists but held Fontbonne to only 11 assists. Fontbonne had 12 turnovers while AU had 14 giveaways. 

Asbury made 19 free-throws out of their 27 attempts while the Griffins made 16 out of 23 chances. The Eagles held Fontbonne to 37 points in the second half to secure the win. 

McNew is now 14-28 from the three-point line on the year, shooting 50% over the first four games. He is averaging 19 per game while sophomore Jonathan Combs is second averaging 14.5 per contest. 

Asbury will host Spalding University on Wednesday night at the Luce Center in Wilmore, Ky., at 7 pm on The Kessinger Lee Group Night.
