Winter's Double-Double Not Enough; Asbury Edged by LeTourneau

STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
WILMORE, Ky.--- Asbury men's basketball (0-3, 0-0 CCS) graduate student Clayton Winter had a double-double in the opening game of the 2024 Zweifel-Pritchett Classic on Thursday night in Wilmore, Ky., but the Eagles fell to LeTourneau University (1-1, 0-0 ASC), 83-75. 

In honor of Asbury Hall of Fame coaches and athletic administrators Cecil Zweifel and Rita Pritchett, the Asbury Zweifel-Pritchett Classic hosts four NCAA Division-III institutions in the Asbury Luce Center with four games. Coach Zweifel and Coach Pritchett are cornerstone pieces of the Asbury University Athletics Department, setting a Christ-honoring standard for the future of utilizing collegiate athletics as a platform to glorify God. 

Winter had a season-high 16 points on 6-12 shooting including a three, and also grabbed 10 rebounds. Sophomores Cayden Lancaster and Jonathan Combs each had 14 points and five rebounds for AU. Lancaster had a steal while Combs had two blocks. 

Asbury senior sport management major Ben McNew had 11 points with three more three-pointers and collected five rebounds. Sophomore Cam Jones had 10 points with four rebounds and four assists. 

LeTourneau graduate guard Deonte Jackson had 24 points with six rebounds while their senior forward Caedmon Liebengood had 19 points with seven reoubnds. 

The Eagles led 28-18 with 10:19 to go in the first half after a three-pointer from sophomore Tyler Hall. LeTourneau went on a 21-10 run to close to half with a 39-38 lead over Asbury. 

The Yellow Jackets outscored AU 44-37 in the second half to take the win. LeTourneau scored 17 points off Asbury's 13 turnovers, while they committed five turnovers. 

AU outrebounded LeTourneau 33-25 and out-shot the Yellow Jackets by one percent, 46% to 45% from the field. LeTourneau made 11 threes while AU made nine. 

Next for Asbury men's hoops will be their second and final game of the Zweifel-Pritchett Classic on Saturday at 6 pm in the Luce Center, meeting Fontbonne University.
