Eagles Suffer First CCS Loss; VandeSchraaf Earns 11th Double-Double

STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga.--- The Asbury volleyball team (15-6, 10-1 CCS) suffered their first CCS loss in the 2024 season on Thursday night to the reigning CCS Champion Covenant Scots (14-12, 8-4 CCS) in Lookout Mountain, Ga., 3-0.

Covenant responded from the Thursday night sweep Asbury completed over the Scots earlier in October with the win. The set scores of the match ended at 25-19, 25-22, and 25-15 in favor of Covenant.

The Eagles were unable to find their stride offensively as they hit their lowest percentage of the season and were held off by Covenant's 11 blocks. AU had a game-high 13 kills in the opening set, but Covenant used a .202 hitting percentage overall in the match.

AU freshman Isabelle VandeSchraaf led the team with 13 kills and 12 digs, marking her 11th double-double of the season. Junior Riley McChord added to the defensive efforts for Asbury with 11 digs, achieving her 19th double-digit dig night out of 21 matches this season.

Junior Lucy Kate Gray and freshman Sarah Beth Gray combined for 27 assists on the night, Lucy Kate with 17 on her own. Senior Emma Grace Gray had six kills while freshman Megan Schelling produced four kills.

McKenna Rumage and Abigail Bruner added two blocks apiece defensively to work to slow down the Covenant attack. The Scots were led by Kelsey Carmen with 10 kills and the reigning CCS Player of the Week, Hannah Mathis with seven also.

Asbury will look to bounce back on Saturday in Wilmore for a home CCS Tri-Match hosting Belhaven University and Agnes Scott College at 12 and 4 pm. The Eagles move to 15-6 overall and stand 10-1 in the CCS after winning their first 10 matches ever in the CCS.
