WILMORE, Ky. --- Asbury women's soccer (1-3-1) took the field Wednesday to face Berea College (0-6-0) in an night matchup in Wilmore. The Eagles collected their first win of the season including Head Coach
Zach Welch's first win as head of the program, 5-0.
Asbury had a good night both offensively and defensively to spark the 5-0 win. The offense contributions came from many different players with goals by five different Eagles including
Caroline Absher,
Maci Muncie,
Hannah Muncie,
Anna Sparks, and
Deidra Long. All five goals coming off assists from different players,
Maci Muncie,
Caroline Absher,
Payton Ardery,
Deidra Long, and
Mary Hostetter.
The defense was lead by keepers
Maliya Crump and
Violette Moore who combined for a clean sheet on the night. The two recorded three saves on the night for their second clean sheet of the year.
Maliya Crump started off the match with a save in the second minute. Crump's save set the tone for the defense and got Asbury some early defensive momentum.
Asbury's first shot of the night came in the fifth minute off the foot of freshman,
Maci Muncie. Muncie's first shot was struck well but saved by the Berea keeper, keeping the game at 0-0.
The first of five goals for Asbury on the night came from the captain,
Caroline Absher who was set up well and assisted by teammate
Maci Muncie. The goal coming in the 13th minute, began a fun night for the Asbury offense.
Asbury got on the board three more times in the first half, coming in the next 15 minutes with goals from
Maci Muncie (20'),
Hannah Muncie (27'), and
Anna Sparks (28'). Asbury did not let in a goal from Berea, and the match was 4-0 heading into the half.
Berea came out attacking early in the second half with a SOG that was saved by
Violette Moore to keep things at 4-0. In the 68th minute Asbury struck again for their last goal of the night, coming from
Deidra Long to take the match to 5-0.
The Asbury women clicked from the start and responded well from a hard fought, challenging loss on Saturday. AU looks to build off this win and keep it rolling into the middle half of their season as they move to 1-3-1.
"Great effort tonight from everyone involved. Lots of positives to continue building on as we progress forward through the season. Tough game coming up on Saturday and this game gave us some momentum moving forward in preparation for that match. Onward and upward!"
