MIDWAY, Ky. --- The Asbury men's soccer team (1-2-1) traveled to Midway, Ky., over the weekend to take on a long-time competitor, Midway University. AU found the back of the net early in the match to lead them to their first win of the 2023 season, 1-0.
Freshman
Salat Kipterit led the board for Asbury with five shots and two on goal. Kipterit, with his first collegiate goal, was AU's lone scorer on the day, with the assist by
Pascal Muller.
Asbury collected a season-high total of 13 shots, with
Ryan Kim and
Austin Dunlap recording three each.Â
Freshman
Peyton French took the field for his first start of his Asbury career and recorded AU's first clean sheet of the season. With a stellar debut performance, French faced four shots on goal and saved all of them.Â
AU was the one to find their momentum early into the match, with Kipterit finding the net just ten minutes in. Asbury had the offensive advantage in the first, beating Midway in shots (8-5) and corners (3-1).
Asbury kept the press high in the second, outshooting Midway 5-3. Despite Midway's three corners in the second, compared to AU's zero, they were not able to get through Asbury's firm defense.Â
Although conceding one goal, Midway Keeper Tyler Glass had a strong day in the box with five saves from six shots faced.
Asbury's defense stood firm in the second half and held Midway, resulting in AU's first win of the season in a 1-0 match.Â
After the 1-0 win over Midway, Asbury moves to 1-1-2.
