TeamAU Opens 2023 Season with All-Athlete & Staff Meeting
WILMORE, Ky. -- The Asbury Athletics Department opened the 2023-24 academic year by hosting its annual meeting of student-athletes, coaches, and staff. The event was hosted at Hughes Auditorium on Sunday night.
The event got started off by Associate Athletics Director and Head of Compliance, Ben Andrews by welcoming and introducing the 2023-2024 staff. There were over 350 student-athletes and more than 20 coaches representing 16 AU teams, in attendance.
Newly appointed Senior Woman Administrator, Kelsey Lang followed up Andrews by introducing herself in her new role. She went on to talk about the multiple athletic and academic resources that are open to our student-athletes on campus. Lang also serves as an advisor for the Women's Student Athlete Support Initiative (WSASI). Also introduced in a new role for Asbury Athletics was Zach Meerkrebs. Meerkrebs will serve as TeamAU Athletics Chaplain and a resource to our student-athletes.
Head Men's Basketball Coach, Will Shouse explained the NCCAA's #KingChasing program and outlined the four pillars that make it, Love, Integrity, Faith, and Excellence.
Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics & University Communications, Mark Whitworth then informed student-athletes of new Asbury Athletics mission statement, Serve > Train > Compete. Whitworth went over the significance for each and why that was chosen to headline TeamAU. He also updated student-athletes on the facility upgrades that are under way on the campus and his vision for Asbury Athletics.
Asbury President, Dr. Kevin Brown took the stage to empower our student-athletes to exemplify Christ and compete in a world that is watching. Dr. Brown also spoke on the importance of the student body and how adversity in athletics can grow our student-athletes for the better.
The evening concluded with TeamAU reviewing its Pillars of Excellence: MISSION, TEAM, CHARACTER, EFFORT, SCHOLAR, and CHAMPION by Director of Athletic Communications & Events, Colton Back.
