Asbury Walks-Off WSU in 11 Innings; Split Saturday Doubleheader

STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
WILMORE, Ky.--- Sophomore Quinn Nobles used a four-pitch walk to walk off Wright State Lake Campus (WSU) in the 11th inning on Saturday night in Wilmore, giving AU the 6-5 win after dropping game one on the day 2-3.

Asbury (5-8) fell in game one of the weekend three-game series with WSU after Jackson Cole gave 4.0 innings of six strikeout work with only two runs allowed. The Lakers held AU to only two runs to take the day's opener, 3-2.

In game two, WSU (5-4) led by one in the ninth inning until Asbury used a two-out rally to keep the game alive, finishing the comeback win in the 11th for their fifth win of 2023.

Jackson Cole and Holten Handel both had solid starts on the mound for Asbury. Cole went 4.0 innings with six punch-outs while Handel went 4.2 with five strikeouts and only one hit. Junior lefty Caleb Poll closed the night with 2.0 innings of work with no runs to secure his first career victory.

Asbury's offense was powered by Matthew Johnson with three hits on the day and an RBI. Jackson Cole was on base six out of eight plate appearances with 2 H, 2 R, and 2 RBI. Sophomore Josh Head went 2-4 on the day with an opposite-field blast in game one.

Game One
Game one's seven-inning game was led by defense and pitching, as Jackson Cole allowed two runs in four innings and WSU's Ethan Griffith gave up only a run in 3.2 innings.

AU struck first in the third with a Matthew Johnson RBI single through the left side to go up 1-0. WSU quickly answered in the fourth, using a leadoff walk and Asbury error to score off an RBI double, 1-1.

Asbury scored only one run after the third inning, coming in the fifth off a Josh Head solo shot over the left-center wall to tie the game, 2-2. Nathaniel Frank was called out at the plate for Asbury in the sixth trying to steal home on a close play.

WSU scored the winning run of the game in the top of the seventh off a wild pitch where the runner scored from third. The Lakers outhit Asbury in the game 8-5, while both teams committed one error.

S. Koedyker took his first win for WSU while Ethan Cartwright took the loss for AU.

Game Two
Both offenses came out in game two ready to play, WSU scoring two in the first followed by Asbury dropping a four spot in the bottom half. Jackson Cole hit a two-run blast over the left field wall before Kaden Dugle and Ethan Cartwright each ended up scoring after singles, giving Asbury a 4-2 lead.

Holten Handel provided his best start yet in 2023, going 4.2 innings with five punch-outs and only one earned run. Gabe Link for WSU matched Handel, coming on in the fourth and going 4.2 innings with no runs allowed on only three hits.

WSU scored a run in the fifth and sixth off RBI singles in each, tying the game at four heading into late innings. The Lakers struck again in the eighth, getting a run on a sacrifice fly to left field.

The Lakers held their lead until the bottom of the ninth when an Asbury two-out rally led to a Matthew Baker bases loaded infield single to tie the game at 5-5, sending the game to extras.

Junior left-hander Caleb Poll went both of the extra innings on the bump for AU with no runs allowed, leading to the Quinn Nobles walk-off walk in the 11th. Poll received his first career win with the performance.

Asbury moves to 5-8 on the year after the doubleheader split, the Lakers go to 5-4.
