McNew's Career-High 23 Points Push Asbury Over Boyce, 100-96


STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
LOUISVILLE, Ky.--- An explosive offensive night powered by sophomore Ben McNew's career-high 23 points pushed Asbury (15-5) over Boyce (6-12) on Tuesday night in Louisville, Ky., for the 100-96 victory. 

McNew, a guard from East Jessamine High School poured in 23 points on only ten attempts from the field, making eight of them. McNew was 4-6 from distance and also grabbed three rebounds with two assists. 

Graduate forward Nick Fort had a typical night for his 2022-23 season, scoring 24 points with seven rebounds off the glass. Fort also made two threes, dished five assists, and grabbed two steals. Dakota Walden filled up the stat sheet as well for Asbury with 13 points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

Senior guard John Shoulders scored 12 points and dished six assists for AU. Lezra Means, a senior from Lebanon, Ky., scored a season-high 11 points with three rebounds.

The Asbury offense matched their highest point total of the season at 101, the other time this season coming against Warren Wilson on December 2nd. AU shot an extremely efficient 55.3 percent from the field and went 12-25 from distance. 

Boyce's offense was right behind Asbury, shooting 56.5 percent from the field and going 12-23 from three. The Bulldogs were led by junior Brody Madeira, scoring 25 points and collecting ten rebounds for a double-double. 

Asbury led the turnover battle all night, scoring 22 points off turnovers compared to Boyce's ten. AU also outscored Boyce in the paint 42-32. 

Both teams lit up the scoreboard in the first half, Asbury scoring 50 points and Boyce adding 46. AU took an early eight point lead with 12:11 to go in the first half but Boyce responded to get things within four heading into the break, 50-46.

The offenses came out in the second half with even more fire, Asbury just outscoring Boyce in the half 51-50. 

AU grabbed their largest lead of the game with 11:29 to go and held a 13 point advantage. Boyce managed to claw back and get the game close once again with minutes remaining. 

Asbury managed to pull off the road victory at Boyce to grab their 15th win of the season.

The Eagles move to 5-2 on the road and 15-5 overall with this victory as they look toward Saturday afternoon at home for senior day.
