Asbury Powers Past Alice Lloyd to Win NCCAA Mideast Championship, Ticket Secured to National Tournament


STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
WILMORE, Ky.--- Asbury men's basketball (19-6) took their second win in two days in the Luce, powering past Alice Lloyd (14-15) on Saturday night to win the NCCAA Mideast Region Championship. 

AU secured their ticket to the NCCAA National Tournament in Winona Lake, In., with their 88-70 victory over ALC. The Eagles will make their second trip the the tournament in as many seasons, looking to capture an NCCAA National Championship. 

Gradutate forward Nick Fort showed up once again, scoring 24 points with 12 rebounds and nine assists (one assist away from a triple-double). Fort's performance gives him 16 double-doubles on the season heading into the National Tournament. 

Sophomore Clayton Winter had a career day, going 9-11 from the field for a career-high 21 points and 10 boards to mark his fourth double-double of the year. Caleb Wallis went 6-6 at the line for AU and made two threes for 14 points. 

Alice Lloyd ws led by Ben Soumahoro, going an efficient 8-10 from the field for 17 points. 

Asbury owned the glass, outrebounding ALC 39-23. AU's offense went 35-66 from the field, shooting over 50 percent for the second night in a row. 

AU took an early lead and kept it, extending it to 27-18 with 9:04 to go in the first half. Clayton Winter went 6-8 in the half to lead all scorers with 13 points. 

Lezra Means scored a tip-in and then drilled a three to give Asbury a 36-25 advantage with 3:31 to go in the first. AU finished the half with a layup from Clayton Winter, finishing the half up 38-28. 

Asbury's offense came out explosive in the second half with 15 points in the first five minutes. AU took their largest lead of the night with 15:18 to go at 53-32. 

Nick Fort led the way in the second half with 16 points behind Asbury's 50 overall in the half. AU went 18-30 in the half, shooting 60 percent and going 4-9 from three. 

The Asbury defense held Alice Lloyd to only 70 points in the game, holding on to take the NCCAA Mideast Regiona Championship.

AU moves to 19-6 overall on the season with this victory and close their home record out at 9-3.

With this win Asbury earns a ticket to the NCCAA National Tournament in Winona Lake, In., beginning March 15. The Eagles have made it to the tournament for two consecutive seasons.
