MILLINGTON, Tn.--- Asbury baseball (3-4) slipped in their doubleheader with MSJ (3-1) on Saturday in Millington, Tn., at the USA Baseball Complex. AU's offense put up six runs in game one but fell 6-11, and only scored one run in game two to fall 1-5.
Freshman
Andrew Billington went 3-6 on the day with his first three hits of his career at AU, including a double.
Quinn Nobles produced two RBIs in game one while
Kaden Dugle added two hits.
Ethan Cartwright had three hits on the day for Asbury.
Noah Brown added two hits and two runs himself.
Freshman
Jack Morris was a bright spot on the mound for AU, going 3.2 innings of work in game two with only one run allowed.
Game One
Ethan Cartwright got the start for AU and went one inning.
David Savastio followed with two innings, then
Colton Perkins with an inning and
Caleb Poll to pitch the final two ups.
AU got on the board first in the day, scoring two runs in the first from
Ethan Cartwright and
Quinn Nobles (2B) RBIs to score
Noah Brown and
Jackson Cole.
MSJ answered quickly with three hits and four runs in the bottom of the first to go ahead 4-2. The Lions added four more in the second on four hits, going ahead 8-2.
Asbury chipped away at the deficit in the third, scoring three runs on three hits.
Ethan Cartwright led the inning off with a single and
Kaden Dugle followed with a double down the left field line, helping bring AU to 5-8.
MSJ continued their offense, scoring two in the bottom half of the third to go up 10-5. Asbury scored one more run in the fourth but couldn't catch up to MSJ as they took game three of the series, 11-6.
Game Two
Freshman
Brody Bearden got the first start of his college career for AU, going 4.1 innings with four earned runs on four hits.
Jack Morris, another AU freshman went 3.2 innings to finish the game with only one earned run.
E. Mason for MSJ went 6.0 innings for the Lions with only four hits, one unearned run, and four strikeouts. D. Richter pitched the final three innings, not allowing a run and striking out three to receive the save.
Game two was the lowest scoring game of the weekend between the two clubs, only seeing six runs combined. Asbury scored first again in the first, this time from an
Ethan Cartwright single where he eventually scored from an MSJ error.
MSJ powered back once again, using a three-run blast from Murray in the bottom of the first over the right field wall to take the 3-1 lead.
The Eagles could only get one across on the strong MSJ pitching staff, falling in game two of the day 1-5.
Asbury moves to 3-4 on the 2023 season after dropping the final three games of the series against MSJ.
