Asbury Loses Lead Late In Midweek at Kentucky State

STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
WILMORE, Ky.--- An eight run first inning wasn't enough as Asbury (2-1) surrendered a large lead late to Kentucky State (3-4), dropping their first loss of the season from a three RBI walk-off double, 12-13.

Senior David Savastio and freshman Brody Bearden led the way on the mound for Asbury, covering the first five innings with only five hits and one earned run combined. Bearden has now pitched 3.2 innings in his collegiate career without giving up a run.

The Eagle offense scored double-digit runs for the second consecutive game. AU was led by senior Noah Brown and sophomore Quinn Nobles who had two hits a piece, combining for five scored runs.

Junior Nathaniel Frank stole his first two bases of the year and scored his first two runs for AU.

In a high scoring contest both teams held their own defensively, only committing two errors each in nine innings. Free passes were key as Asbury walked nine and hit one while Kentucky State walked ten and hit five.

AU managed to outhit the strong offense of K State, putting together 11 hits compared to the Thorobreds' eight.

Asbury scored eight runs in the top of the first inning, starting the game with two hits and two free passes in the first four hitters. The Eagles hit all the way around the order in the first.

AU added to their lead in the second, scoring two more runs capped by a Noah Brown RBI single to take the lead to 10-0.

Over the next three innings Asbury scored one more run and Kentucky State managed to get on the board, putting the game at 11-1 heading to the sixth.

AU manufactured another run in the top of the sixth before Kentucky State's offense woke up in the bottom half to score seven runs, moving the score to 12-8. The runs were on four hits, five walks, and no errors.

Kentucky State shortened their deficit once again in the eighth, scoring two runs on three hits and one error. AU still held a 12-10 lead heading to the ninth.

Junior left-handed pitcher Caleb Poll got two outs on Kentucky State in the bottom of the ninth before J. Esparza double to left-center with the bases loaded to score all three, walking off the game to give K State the 13-12 win.

Asbury moves to 2-1 on the season and are now tied in the overall series count with Kentucky State at 14 wins a piece.
