Eagles Split Double Header Against Centre and Wooster to Open 2023 Season

STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
DANVILLE, Ky. --- The Asbury Softball team opened their 2023 season on Saturday afternoon in a double-header against Centre College and the College of Wooster. Freshmen Isabel Rochemont and Tori Giurgevich helped lead the battle against Centre, bringing AU out on top, 1-0. Asbury fell to the College of Wooster 8-0 in their second game of the day.

Game One (Centre College):

Sophomore pitcher Kaylee Strunk took the mound against Centre to begin the 2023 season. Strunk faced 19 batters and grabbed four strikeouts and only allowed four hits.

Through the first four innings, AU and Centre remained scoreless. Despite Centre getting two players on base in the bottom of the third, they were not able to bring any runners home due to Strunk's two strikeouts and a lineout to second.

Isabel Rochemont began at-bat in the top of the fifth and quickly singled to left field to get on base. After a groundout to second from KaleyJo Myers, Rochemont was able to advance to second to bring her into scoring position. Rochemont was able to find her way to third off of a wild pitch.

With Rochemont in scoring position, Tori Giurgevich stepped up to the plate and grounded out to shortstop to bring Rochemont home for AU's lone run of the game.

Centre's defense held Asbury to their one run of the game, but were not able to put up offensive efforts to bring anyone home for the rest of the game. Asbury held Centre to a shutout and recorded a 1-0 for their first game of the season.

Game Two (The College of Wooster):

From the start of the Eagles' second game, the Scots came out on fire after just beating Wooster 6-0.

In the first inning, Wooster had three hits and three runs, and AU was unable to answer.

Wooster continued that press and got three more runs in the top of the second.
Asbury began to gain momentum in the bottom of the second, with the offense loading the bases. Despite Asbury filling the bases, the Eagles popped two up and were unable to take advantage of the momentum.

In the third, Asbury continued to come close to bringing runners home, but were unable to capitalize.

Determined to claim their victory, Wooster grabbed two more runs in the top of the fourth.

The game remained scoreless through the bottom of the fifth, and the game ended short as the Eagles got run-ruled by the Scots.

Going into tomorrow's double-header against the same teams, AU will enter 1-1.
