FRANKFORT, Ky.--- Three Eagles had double-digit kills for Asbury volleyball (9-15) on Thursday night in Frankfort, as AU slipped after five sets in their second meeting of the season against Kentucky State.
Sidney Haysley had a team-leading 13 kills, her fourth most this season to be third on the team in her freshman year with 190 kills. She also had three aces and five digs on the night.
Emma Grace Gray had 12 kills, five digs, and two aces. Gray now has 15 double-digit kill matches in 2023.
Freshman
McKenna Rumage was the other Eagle with double-digit kills, taking 10 in only 18 attempts for a strong .333 hitting percentage. Rumage also served two aces and had three digs.
Riley McChord led Asbury defensively with 13 digs.
Lucy Kate Gray had 27 assists to lead both teams, taking her to 658 on the season.
Both teams scored 92 overall points on the night, Asbury with 52 kills compared to the Thorobreds' 34. AU committed 31 errors while Kentucky State finished with 13.
Set-by-Set Recap
Set One
Asbury came out strong to open the match, taking a 10-3 lead in the first set after kills from
Lauran Barber and
McKenna Rumage. The Eagle offense continued to press, using 11 kills in the set to take a 25-9 win.
Set Two
The second set was back-and-forth to open,
Megan Walden boosting AU to an 11-9 lead after a kill. Kentucky State pushed back, going on a 11-6 run to take the lead over AU, 20-17.
The Thorobreds finished the set off with four of the final five points, winning the set 25-19.
Set Three
The Thorobreds continued the momentum in the third set, going ahead 13-9 early. Asbury used
Megan Walden and
Sidney Haysley kills to regain the advantage, going up 20-14.
McKenna Rumage finsihed the set off with a kill to lead AU to a 25-18 win.
Set Four
Kentucky State had their strongest set of the night in the fourth, leading from 2-1 throughout the rest of the set. They had their most kills in a set all night with 12, winning the set to force a fifth, 25-18.
Set Five
In the fifth set Asbury had eight attack errors while Kentucky State used two kills to come back from a 2-1 set deficit and win the fifth, 15-5.
The Eagles move to 9-15 on the season after the road deficit.
