Asbury Shuts Out Oakland City to Advance to NCCAA Mideast Championship

STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
WILMORE, Ky. --- After almost three weeks of no competition, the Asbury men's soccer team hosted Oakland City for round one of the NCCAA Mideast Regional Tournament on Thursday night. After a scoreless first, AU went on to claim two of their own to take the victory over Oakland City in a 2-0 match.

Four seniors were honored on Thursday for their time and commitment to the program. AU seniors included Sydney Lee, Delorges Lavra, Bryan Ortiz, and Mason Anderson. They are wished well in their future and we thank them for their time at AU.

Thursday's match marks AU's eighth shutout this season, with all eight coming from Freshman keeper Peyton French. French now sits at No.1 in the NCCAA for goals allowed with only eight in his 13 played.

Jason Flaming was AU's leader tonight, putting up three shots, all on goal. After 65 scoreless minutes of play, Flaming would find the back of the net with help from Luke Thomas.

Both sides of the Eagles were hot tonight with AU combining for 18 shots with six going on goal. Notable contributors were Dalton Fleshood, Jason Flaming, Austin Dunlap, and Luke Thomas all grabbing three shots of their own.

AU's defense displayed impressive efforts of their own, holding the Mighty Oaks to just four shots and one corner.

The Eagles began the first eager to find the back of the net, putting up four shots in the first seven minutes. The first would remain scoreless, with AU totaling nine shots and holding Oakland City to two.

The second began to mirror the first with both sides going scoreless for the first 24 minutes of the half. In the 66th minute, Jason Flaming found the back of the net off a tap-in from Luke Thomas, to put the Eagles up 1-0.

AU's high-press style of play would go on to force an own goal from the Mighty Oaks after Austin Dunlap crossed a ball into the box, giving AU a 2-0 lead with 18 minutes left in regulation.

The Eagles went on to hold Oakland City to their two shots in the second and took their 2-0 victory to advance to the NCCAA Mideast Regional Championship.

Thursday's victory marks the first time that AU has made it past the semi-final game since re-joining the NCCAA in 2020. The Eagles will advance to play Campbellsville University on Saturday at 7 PM for the title of Mideast Regional Champions.
