Asbury Sweeps Welch in Return Home for Ninth Win


STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
WILMORE, Ky.--- Asbury volleyball (9-10) took their ninth win on Monday night, sweeping Welch College in the Luce Center with a .309 hitting percentage. 

The .309 is Asbury's most efficient of the season, as they have now won two straight, and four of their last six to be one win short of .500. In head coach Tiffany Horton's second year, the Eagles are finding their stride heading into the back half of the 2023 season.

Sophomore Sidney Haysley led the Eagles with 12 kills, trailed by Emma Grace Gray with her 12th double-digit kill match of the year. 

Riley McChord supporeted AU defensively with 11 digs, alongside Arian Bluestein, and Isabella Brewer with seven apiece. 

Asbury served nine aces and had 39 total kills with only 10 errors, their second lowest error match of the year behind the Berea sweep. 

Set-by-Set Recap 

Set One

AU had a strong start to the night with two McKenna Rumage service aces that led to a 10-3 advantage. Welch fought back with a 7-2 run that brought them to 14-22, but AU used a Megan Walden kill to finish the set, 25-17. 

Set Two
In the second set, Asbury responded to a quick Welch 2-1 edge with six straight points to go ahead, 7-2. Welch scored off a service ace and and Asbury errors for a four-point swing, getting within four at 10-13. 

Asbury responded to the run with a 6-0 push themselves, using two Sidney Haysley kills late to take a 25-14 win, 2-0.

Set Three
The Eagle offense continued to soar in the third set, scoring the first five points and then going up 15-4. Asbury's defense allowed their fewest points in a set of the night, winning 25-11 to secure the match. 

After taking win number nine, the Eagles set their focus on Kentucky State this Wednesday night in Frankfort, Ky.
