MIDWAY, Ky.--- The sixth ranked in the NCCAA Asbury men's basketball team (13-5) scored a powerful 39 first half points, but came up short in overtime on Wednesday night at Midway University (11-7), 78-87.
Asbury was led offensively by graduate forward
Nick Fort, scoring 27 points and grabbing 11 rebounds for his 13th double-double. Fort also dished four assists and took three steals from Midway.
Junior
Caleb Wallis and sophomore
Ben McNew were the other Asbury Eagles in double-digits, Wallis with 13 and McNew with 12. Wallis had four assists and five rebounds while McNew went 4-8 from three with three rebounds.
Clayton Winter led Asbury in rebounds on the night with 12.
Midway junior guard Donnie Miller led all scorers with 39 points, going 15-16 from the free-throw line. Tobias Thompson followed Miller with 18 points for Midway, going eight of nine from the field.
Asbury won the battle from behind the arc, making 13 threes compared to Midway's six. AU also outrebounded Midway on the glass with 42 boards to Midway's 39.
Midway shot a higher field goal percentage, going 31-63 from the field while Asbury went 25-68. Both teams struggled in turnovers, Asbury committing 18 and Midway 15. Midway excelled in the paint, scoring 44 paint points to Asbury's 20.
Asbury's offense got going early in the first half, grabbing a 17-8 lead only six minutes in.
Ben McNew made a three, one of his four in the half, that pushed the AU lead to 37-18 with 7:04 to go in the first.
Midway responded with a 14-2 run to close the first half, cutting the Asbury lead to 39-32. Asbury dominated the first half, making eight threes with 11 assists and outrebounding Midway 22-17.
Midway started the first five minutes of the second half on a 10-4 run, bringing them within one at 42-43. After a 46-46 tie, an
Ashton Owens three kickstarted a 12-3 run for Asbury that regained their lead to 58-49 with 7:02 left to go.
Nick Fort scored ten consecutive points for Asbury in the run.
Midway battled back to tie things at 64 with only 1:07 remaining.
Nick Fort drilled a three for Asbury with 42 seconds to go that gave them a 67-64 advantage.
With ten seconds to go, Midway's Donnie Miller made a layup to tie the game at 68, sending the matchup into overtime.
Midway scored the first 12 points of overtime and went on to complete the comeback win, 87-78.
Asbury moves to 13-5 on the season.

Asbury will receive a ten day break, returning to action on January 28 in the Luce Center against Boyce College at 3 pm for the Ray Shouse game.
