Women's Soccer Records First Shutout Against Defiance, 5-0



DEFIANCE, Oh. --- The Asbury Women's Soccer team took on Defiance College this afternoon in their seventh away game of the season. Coming off of Wednesday's intense game against Transylvania, the Eagles were eager to tally a win from today's match. The Eagles and Yellow Jackets both fought hard throughout the game, but Defiance's effort was outmatched by the Eagles, giving AU a 5-0 victory.

Throughout the first half, AU had clear control of the game, taking 21 shots within the 45 minutes. After 33 minutes of play, the Eagles were able to away a goal as Maryah Jones found the back of the net. Jones scored off of an assist from Caroline Absher. This was Jones' first goal of the 2022 season, as well as Absher's first assist.

Asbury's defense came ready to play as well, holding Defiance to 0 shots within the entire first half. This performance from AU set the halftime score as 1-0 AU.

It was the second half where the Eagles fell into a rhythm and were able to take more accurate shots. Only four minutes into the second period, Caroline Absher set the tone for the rest of the match, scoring a self-driven goal for TeamAU. Defiance answered by taking a shot just two minutes later, but was not able to get off an accurate shot against Asbury's defense.

Fifteen minutes into the second period, it was Hannah Muncie scoring for AU, possible by an assist from Mary Hostetter. This is Muncie's second goal in two games as she scored on Wednesday night agains Transy.

A short three minutes later, Genevieve Hill scored a fourth goal for the Eagles. Hill has continued to provide goals for the Eagles, with today's goal turning her goal streak into four games. Hill's goal was unanswered until eight minutes later, when Defiance took another attack toward goal, but to no prevail.

Only 12 minutes following, Hill scored yet another goal for Asbury, placing a fifth goal in the back of the net for AU. This is Hill's fifth goal of the season to lead the Asbury team. 

Defiance was unable to answer back, sealing the game as a shutout for the Eagles, beating the Yellow Jackets 5-0.
