Volleyball Edged by Rio Grande in Five Sets

RIO GRANDE, Oh. --- Asbury volleyball went on the road Tuesday night to matchup with Rio Grande University. AU took Rio Grande all the way to five sets on their home court before falling in the final set in a back and forth battle. 

Emma Grace and Lucy Kate Gray led Asbury throughout the night, putting up incredible numbers with 52 assists (Lucy Kate) and 19 kills (Emma Grace). This close matchup had only a seven overall point difference as Asbury finished with 69 and Rio Grande 76 on the night. 

Rio Grande came out strong on their home court taking a 20-10 lead in the first set and eventually taking the set 25-17. Asbury responded in the second set of the match with a gutsy 27-25 victory that tied the teams at 1-1.

Another close set that saw 10 ties throughout, ended in a strong push from Rio Grande that gave them the 25-20 set win. AU then moved into the fourth set with their back against the wall and responded once again, this time with force taking the 25-20 set win over Rio.

The fifth and final set was back and forth all the way until a 7-7 tie, that moved into a Rio Grande three point swing they wouldn't look back from. Rio went on to win the deciding set 15-10 and took the match over Asbury in an extremely competitive matchup. 

* Freshman, Lucy Kate Gray set her career record for assists in a game with 52 (her previous record was 39)
* Emma Grace Gray led Asbury with an impressive 19 kills on the night
* Riley McChord led Asbury with 15 digs, Emily Janszen was right behind her with 13
* Emily Janszen (14) and Megan Walden (12) were also in the double digits for kills 

"Although it was a tough five set loss, we fought hard. I'm proud that we walked out of the gym with our heads held high and I know we will fight back tomorrow against Kentucky State."

Asbury will host Kentucky State University on Wednesday night at 6 pm for their second home game of the season
