CINCINNATI, Oh.---
Trinity Shearer shined for Asbury (8-7) with 17 points on 8-12 shooting on Wednesday night, but Mount St. Joseph's (4-5) 12 threes were too much as they defeated AU 70-65 in Cincinnati, Oh.
Shearer's 17 points are her second most this season, as she also grabbed four rebounds and three steals.
Tiffani Riley was the other Eagle in double-digits with 11 points, three rebounds, and two steals.
Sophomore
Haleigh Releford scored eight points for Asbury and gathered seven boards. Junior
Spencer Harvey picked up eight rebounds of her own and scored six points.Â
Mount St. Joseph (MSJ) was led by Karlee Mills with 18 points and Chloe Jansen with 16. Mills went 3-5 from three while Jansen made 4-5 from distance, combining for seven threes between the two.Â
AU only went 6-23 in the game from three compared to MSJ going 12-22. Asbury's defense pressured MSJ into 24 turnovers, but the AU offense also gave away 19 turnovers.Â
Asbury opened up strong with an 8-2 run to start the game in the first five minutes. MSJ rallied back from this deficit with a 9-2 swing to give them an 11-9 lead.
Camryn Preston knocked down two free-throws to send AU to the second quarter up 13 (Asbury) to 12 (MSJ).Â
MSJ came out hot in the second quarter scoring the first eight points to go up 20-13. Sophomore
Tiffani Riley stepped up for Asbury with a jumper and three-pointer to end the half with the Eagles leading 28 (Asbury) 27Â (MSJ).Â
Mount St. Joseph went 8 for 13 from three in the second half. Asbury made 4 of 13.Â
Both teams went back and forth the entire third quarter with four lead changes. Asbury had their strongest offensive quarter of the night with 20 points, led by
Trinity Shearer with 11 of her 17. AU led 48-45 heading into the final quarter.
MSJ's offense exploded in the fourth quarter for 25 points, the most by any time in a quarter in the game. A
Trinity Shearer layup gave Asbury a 57-55 lead with 6:06 remaining, but that would be the Eagles' last lead as the MSJ offense got going.Â
MSJ scored 15 points on 4-7 shooting (two threes) in the final six minutes to give them the 70-65 home win over Asbury.Â
Asbury moves to 8-7 on the season with this road defeat.Â
