Eagles Late Push Falls Short at Union College

STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
BARBOURVILLE, Ky.--- Erin Sexauer notched double-digit kills for the third consecutive match, tying Megan Walden for the game-high at 12 as the Eagles late push falls short to Union College on Saturday afternoon in Barbourville, Ky.

Lucy Kate Gray produced 39 assists in four sets, one of her top assist amounts in a game this season. Riley McChord pitched in 16 digs, four aces, and three assists for AU in the match. Callie Goodwin added six kills and three aces.

Asbury dropped the first two sets but came roaring back with a convincing victory in the third and then led late in the fourth set, looking to force the deciding fifth set. Union managed to push back and hold on to take the win over Asbury in four sets. 

Each team put up 45 kills in the match, but Union led the way with hitting a .242. Asbury hit their best percentage in the fourth set at .263, but was matched by Union hitting at .353. 

Set One
After being level at four, Union went on a powerful run to the set the tone of the first set scoring ten of the next eleven points. Asbury went on two three point swings but the deficit Union had stretched out proved to be too much to recover from. Union secured the first set of the match with a 25-16 win. 
 
Set Two
In the second set, Union continued their offensive streak as they started the set scoring 13 of the first 20 points. Despite kills from Emily Janszen, Megan Walden, and Emma Dexter, Union's offense continued to add points until they took the second set 25-14. 

Set Three
Asbury decided not to give up after being down 2-0, coming out in the third set striking with two early aces from Riley McChord and Callie Goodwin. After being down 6-4, AU went on a six point swing to turn the set around and take a 10-6 lead. Shortly after this run, Megan Walden struck with consecutive kills and her teammate Erin Sexauer backed those up with another kill. Union made a late push scoring four consecutive but Sexauer's continued offense held onto AU's lead, giving them the 25-16 victory.

Set Four
The fourth set was a battle, both teams going back and forth as Asbury gave all they had to force this match into a fifth set. AU scored six consecutive points early that gave them an 8-3 lead, led by multiple kills from Megan Walden. This energy and momentum continued all the way into a 19-13 lead for AU as they hunted to win their second set of the day. Union responded with an 8-2 run that brought them all the way back to tied with Asbury at 21. AU continued to push, taking a 24-22 and 26-25 lead, but were unable to finish the final point needed to force a fifth set. Union scored the final three points to take the match on their home court with a 28-26 third set win.

STORY - NEXT UP
Asbury will return home for their final match of the season, a home match on Tuesday evening at 6:30 pm against University of the Cumberlands. This match will be senior night for the Eagles.
