WILMORE, Ky.--- Sophomore
Emma Grace Gray led the way on senior night with 17 kills but the Eagles fell short in four sets to the University of the Cumberlands.
Seniors Erin Sexuauer,
Hannah Morris,
Madi Bryant and
Emma Ingalls were honored pregame in the senior night festivities for their careers on the Asbury volleyball team.
Lucy Kate Gray followed her sister's performance with four aces and 24 assists to complete her stellar freshman season. Senior
Hannah Morris also piled in the assists for AU on senior night as she rose to the occasion for her best match of the year with with 17 assists and 10 digs.
Asbury had three players in double-digit digs on the night as Morris had 10,
Emma Grace Gray with 15 and
Riley McChord leading the way with 19. Gray led the offense in kills with her second highest performance of the season at 17. Janszen followed with an efficient nine kills and zero errors. Sexauer added six kills in her final game as an Eagle, recently being named the Asbury University Lexington Clinic Player of the Week.
Asbury hit a strong .286 in the first set to take the 1-0 lead, but UC charged back hitting an overall .333 for the entire match.
Set One
The first set of this match was back and forth as both teams weren't giving an inch to one another. Asbury took a four point swing in the middle of the set, powered by consecutive kills from
Emma Grace Gray to give them the 16-15. UC responded with a run of their own to take a 19-17 lead heading into the final points of the match. An 8-3 run by AU from
Erin Sexauer and
Emily Janszen kills lifted the home Asbury crowd with the Eagles taking the first set of the match, 25-22.
Set Two
Asbury continued their momentum into the second set as consecutive
Emily Janszen kills led AU to a 5-3 lead. UC turned things around after this by seven points in a row to take a 10-5 lead that Asbury couldn't recover from. Despite AU scoring late points to get to 15, UC took the set 25-15 to even things up at 1-1.
Set Three
The key third set was tight throughout as UC led early but Asbury took a 5-1 run powered by kills from
Emma Grace Gray and an ace from
Lucy Kate Gray to take a 16-15 lead. Asbury continued their momentum as freshman
Megan Walden notched to kill to give AU a 19-16 looking for the third set win. UC put their foot in the ground after that point, going on a 9-2 run to give them the 25-21 win.
Set Four
The UC Patriots that had won their previous seven sets kept their momentum going as they pressed on in the fourth set to take an early 12-4 lead. Despite Asbury's battle all night, the third set took a lot out of them and they couldn't respond to the continued pressure from UC. UC managed to continue their offense to take a 25-12 win for their eighth straight win.

This match marks the end of the 2022 season for Asbury. They finish the year at 5-15 in the first year with new head coach
Tiffany Horton.
