WILMORE, KY.--- Erin Sexauer and Emma Grace Gray each produced double-digit kills as the Eagles fell on Tuesday evening in a home matchup with Covenant College, 0-3.
Asbury hit .155 as a team with 37 overall kills and eight aces. AU also produced 46 digs in the match, led by Emily Janszen with ten. Lucy Kate Gray put together another impressive game with 30 assists in only three sets. Erin Sexauer has now had double-digit kills in two consecutive matches. Covenant hit .299 and had 44 total kills on the evening.
Set One
In the first set of this contest it was back and forth throughout, Asbury being the first to gain a 13-9 lead that was led by
Riley McChord serving to three consecutive points. Covenant pushed back and forced AU into an 18-18 tie with the key first set up in the air for who would take the early match lead. Covenant scored five of the next six points to take a 23-19 lead but Asbury wasn't not done, climbing all the way back to just a 23-24 deficit. This run was led by two consecutive aces from
Emily Janszen. Covenant responded with a final kill in the set to take the 25-23 first set over Asbury, giving them a momentum swinging 1-0 lead.
Set Two
The second set started off as another close battle, Asbury receiving kills from
Erin Sexauer,
Emily Janszen, and
Emma Grace Gray early on. After AU took a 10-8 lead it was a Covenant nine point run that responded firmly for them to take a 17-10 lead. Although AU battled all the way back to down 20-22, led by kills from
Erin Sexauer and
Emma Grace Gray, Covenant stood strong when it counted again taking a 25-20 win in the second set.
Set Three
Out of a close matchup for the entire evening, the third set proved to be the closest. Asbury took a four point swing at the middle of the match, giving them a 14-10 lead they held onto for a long duration of the set.
Riley McChord produced consecutive aces for this run and AU also received a kill from
Emma Dexter. Covenant made their run late in the set when they went on a 6-1 run to tie the set at 21-21. Asbury managed to take a 24-23 lead with the serve and game point on their side, but Covenant battled to score three points in a row taking the set 26-24, and getting the 3-0 win over Asbury.
