WILMORE, Ky. – After several game cancellations, the Asbury University women's lacrosse team finally had their season opener to the 2021 season on Thursday afternoon.
The Eagles faced a tough challenge against one of the top teams in the NAIA and fell 22-4 at home.
Highlights
*The Eagles came out strong with
Ashley Byrd scoring in the first minute of the contest to take an early 1-0 lead.
*Cumberlands answered back with two goals of their own within minutes of each other.
*Abigail Peklo tied the game up in the first half of the contest with 24 minutes left in the first half.
*CU would then take the lead scoring 13 unanswered goals before halftime. The Patriots led 15-2 at the break.
*AU continued to work hard in the second and gained two more goals one from
Aubrey Curell with an assist from
Grace Tatro and
Ashley Byrd.
*University of the Cumberlands kept the lead while scoring an additional seven more goals to end the contest at 22-4.
Key Stats

Mia Doron led the Eagles in draw control wins with five and a team-high three ground balls. Doron also caused two turnovers throughout the game.
*Both
Maddy Hoke and
Aubrey Curell each won three draw controls.
*Byrd finished with 2 goals while Curell and Peklo recorded one apiece.
*The Eagles had 20 turnovers in the contest while CU only had 14.

Elle Crossman recorded five saves while freshman goalie
Elsie Kopczynski completed one save in goal.
*Cumberlands outshot AU 37-18 and posted 28 shots on-goal while AU placed 11.
*The Eagles had 11 successful clears and scooped up 13 ground balls in the game.
