CAMPBELLSVILLE Ky. - The Asbury volleyball team lost on the road against Campbellsville 3-0 (11-25, 18-25, 17-25). The Eagles fought valiantly, but couldn't overcome a CU team that has earned nine victories in their last 10 starts.
The Eagles started the first set strong, as the teams played to an early 6-6 score. Campbellsville then took control serving aggressively and producing multiple scoring runs of four points or more to win the set 25-11.
The second set saw the Eagles trail early, with CU taking a 14-8 lead. The Eagles slowly chipped away at the CU lead, aided by a couple of blocks by Emma Ingalls and an ace by Madi Bryant. Asbury cut the lead to one with the set count at 16-15 in favor of CU. CU went on a 9-3 scoring run to end the set.
The Eagles jumped out to a quick 4-2 lead in the third set. Passing woes plagued the Eagles once again, with the Tigers going on an 11-point run accented by three service aces. Asbury battled back, cutting the lead to five (18-13). The Tigers' service game proved too tough for AU, and CU won the third set 25-17.
Emma Grace Gray led the Eagles with five kills. Sydney Fleshood led the defensive effort with 12 digs. Gray contributed 11 digs and Emily Janszen 10 digs.
Quote from Coach Stowe: "This was one of the top three teams we've played this season. Their defense was outstanding. We've made strides in our passing game since the beginning of the season, but their serve was also challenging. We couldn't seem to get into any rhythm."
"Our defense did a wonderful job of keeping us in the match. Emma Ingalls did a great job blocking for us tonight, and Sydney, Emily, and Emma Grace kept us in quite a few rallies. I was very proud of the way the team competed."
Next Match: The Eagles return to action when they host Alice Lloyd Thursday, October 21, at 7pm in the Luce Center.
