HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. The Asbury University baseball team won its eighth straight game on Saturday afternoon as the Eagles recorded two wins over Thomas More in non-conference play.
Saturday's games were played at NKU and the Eagles took game one 1-0 and game two 7-2.
Asbury is now 11-2 on the season with the doubleheader sweep.
Game one
*
Will McDonald got the start on the mound and was fantastic as he shut down the Saints' offense with a complete-game shutout.
*McDonald fanned eight TMU batters and only allowed six hits throughout seven innings of work.
*Asbury scored the only run of the game in the sixth off an RBI from
Walker Paris, which scored
Garrett McIntire.
*For the game, AU posted five hits. McIntire,
Austin Dick,
Trevor Campbell,
Colton Back, and Matt Baker all finished with one hit apiece.
Game two
*Starting pitching continued to dominate as
Alec Lush got the nod in game two.
*Lush had a great outing, pitching six innings and striking out 12 batters, which marks a career-high.
*The Louisville, Ky. native allowed only four hits and did not allow a run.
*Asbury took an early 2-0 edge in the top half of the first as McIntire and Dick each scored.
*The Eagles struck again in the fifth off an RBI single from
CJ Compton which brought home
Trevor Campbell.
*
Paul Haupt smashed a three-run home run in the sixth to make it a 6-0 advantage for AU.
*Asbury's bats were very productive in game two as the Eagles collected 12 hits in total.
*Thomas More scored two runs to get on the board in the seventh, but it would be the only runs scored for the day from the Saints.
*
Colton Back's RBI single in the ninth added an extra run of insurance for Asbury.
*
Jackson Cole and
Chase Thomas pitched shutout eighth and ninth innings to preserve the victory.
*Compton led the Eagles' offense with a team-high three hits.
*
Riley Baumbick also posted a multi-hit game with two hits, while freshman
Matthew Johnson posted his first hit of the year in the win.
