Softball Falls to No. 12 Indiana Wesleyan

Wilmore, Ky. – The Asbury University softball team dropped its home opener doubleheader with No. 12 Indiana Wesleyan on Monday afternoon in Wilmore in non-conference play.

The Eagles (1-3) had a tough matchup in both games, losing game one with a score of 6-2.

Game two ended in five innings after a score of 15-5.

Asbury hit two homers on the day, one in each game, with Chandler Kelly getting her first home run of the season in game 1.

In game 2, Deana Philips went deep for her fourth home run of the season.

With eight home runs on the season, this brings Asbury within 1 home run of tying their total last season.

Game One
  • Ally Moore got the start in the circle and held her own early on, tossing two shutout innings of work.
  • For the game, Moore struck out 4 in three innings pitched.
  • After being held scoreless through the first four innings, Chandler Kelly broke up the no-hitter by belting a home run in the fifth.
  • The Eagles scored once more on a single by Philips in the sixth, which scored Paige Hill.
  • Asbury had an opportunity to tie the game with the bases stacked in the sixth, but AU came away empty-handed.
  • Indiana Wesleyan closed it out in the seventh on a line out.
  • Mara Goodwin and McKenzie Meyer pitched the final four innings in relief, and allowed only one earned run apiece.
Game Two
  • The Asbury bats picked up their productivity in game two with 8 total hits.
  •  Maddie Burke had her second multi-hit game of the year with two base hits.
  • Deana Philips smashed a 2-run home run to center on a 0-0 count in the bottom of the third to bring the deficit down to 3 (6-3).
  • The Eagles managed to score once more in the inning with Kelly making it home off an RBI from Bree Sanders.
  • IWU then closed out game two after adding four runs in the fifth.
  • Phillips finished with two RBI, while Sanders and Harley Wagoner each tacked on one RBI apiece.
  • Hill and Burke each recorded a double in the loss.

Asbury will play again on Friday against University of the Cumberlands in Oneida, Tenn.
