Asbury Hoops Hits 15 Threes in 76-70 Victory over Covenant

WILMORE, Ky. – The Asbury University men's basketball team knocked down 15 threes in Wednesday's 76-70 victory at the Luce Center over Covenant College.

AU improves to 5-2 on the year and will have a rematch with Covenant tomorrow afternoon at 2 PM at home.

The Eagles shot 45 percent from the floor in the win and were 9-15 from the foul line.

Key Stats
*Junior Eric Powell connected on six threes and finished 6-11 from the field with a team-high 21 points. Powell also collected five rebounds with three assists and three steals.
*Siah Holifield added 14 points and five rebounds on 5-10 shooting for the game.
*Nick Fort collected 13 points and Leander Ridgeway finished with 10 points and four assists as four Eagles finished in double figures scoring.
*Asbury's defense also came up big on Wednesday as they forced 22 turnovers and scored 27 points off turnovers.
*Dakota Walden posted seven points with a career-high five assists.
*AU scored 45 points from beyond the arc and 20 points inside the paint.

Highlights
*It was a slow start for both teams in the opening half, as Asbury opened the contest just 1-12 from the floor.
*Down 26-24 at halftime, the Eagles regrouped in the second half.
*Trailing 35-29, AU ripped off a 22-7 run over the span of four minutes to take a 51-42 lead following back-to-back threes from John Shoulders and Nick Fort, along with a fast-break layup by Dakota Walden.
*The Eagles would never trail for the remainder of the contest, but the Scots were able to even the score at 54-54 with under 7 minutes left.
*AU quickly pushed ahead with two straight threes from Eric Powell and Leander Ridgeway for a six-point edge.
*Moments later, Powell drew a foul on a three-point attempt and sunk all three free throws to maintain a 70-64 advantage with 2 minutes remaining.
*Asbury finished 4-6 from the free-throw line in the final minutes to hold on to the lead and the win.
