Eagles Move to 2-0 with 74-71 Win at Cumberland

LEBANON, Tenn. – The Asbury University men's basketball team collected their first road win of the 2020-21 season on Saturday afternoon with a 74-71 victory at Mid-South opponent Cumberland University. 

Asbury moves to 2-0 on the year and gives CU its first loss of the year.

Key Stats
*Senior Leander Ridgeway had a big day for the Eagles with a double-double of 18 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. The Lexington, Ky. native was also a perfect 12-12 from the free throw line and dished out a team-high five assists.
*Eric Powell finished with 18 points and was 4-5 from three-point territory.
*John Shoulders scored a career-high 13 points and Nick Fort also reached double figures scoring for the second straight game with 12 points.
*Asbury shot 44 percent from the floor and 47 percent from three in the win. AU finished the game 18-25 from the foul line.
*The Eagles scored nine points off turnovers and finished with 18 points inside the paint.

Highlights
* It was a back-and-forth first half with a total of 10 lead changes, and AU found themselves trailing by one point at halftime at 36-35.
*In the second half, the Eagles started things off with a 7-2 run to re-take the lead.
*The Eagles trailed again at 47-45, but went on a 14-6 run to take a 59-53 advantage. The run was capped off with a three-point field goal from John Shoulders.
*A jumper from Nick Fort in the paint with less than three minutes left kept AU ahead 70-62.
*However, Cumberland would not go away and cut the lead down to just one after a 7-0 run.
*Siah Holifield knocked down a huge bucket from the right-side baseline to end the scoring drought and keep AU ahead 72-69 with 36 seconds left.
*Leading 72-71, Leander Ridgeway sank two more free throws to preserve the lead and victory as CU missed a three-point shot from the top of the key in the final seconds.  

Next Up
Asbury returns to play next weekend for the Bevo Francis Classic at Rio Grande. The Eagles will matchup with Great Lakes Christian on Friday.
