RIO GRANDE, Ohio – The Asbury University women's soccer team picked up their first River States Conference win of the year on Saturday evening at Rio Grande. The Eagles were victorious 2-1 to improve to 2-8 overall on the year and 1-1 in conference action.
All three goals in Saturday's matchup were scored within the first 25 minutes of play.
The Eagles had a couple of opportunities to get on the board early on, but
Elizabeth Sparks' shot was saved, and
Jordan Holt's shot attempt hit the crossbar.
Rio Grande scored in the 4
th minute off a direct kick from the right wing for a 1-0 edge.
However, Asbury would respond with their first goal of the match in the 18
th minute as
Kaitlyn Maricle scored on a penalty kick.
Five minutes later, Asbury would strike again as sophomore
Elizabeth Sparks put one in the back of the net inside the box off a pass from
Delaney Long.
The Eagles posted 11 shots in the opening half AU went into halftime with a 2-1 lead.
AU held off nine shot attempts by URG in the second half to keep their lead at 2-1 to preserve the victory.
Rio's final two shots of the match were blocked and then saved. Goalkeeper
Carley Pyles added four saves in the win.
Jordan Holt led Asbury with a team-high four shots. Sparks registered three shots and both
Susie Terrazas and
Olivia Ruckriegel had two shots.
AU finished with 14 shots in total.
Asbury will return home and will be back in play on Thursday evening as they host Carlow. Thursday's match is set to begin at 5 PM.
