BELLEVILLE, Ill. – The Asbury University men's soccer team fell 5-3 on the road at Lindenwood-Belleville on Thursday evening in non-conference play. AU drops to 1-4 on the season with the defeat.
Thursday's match was the first of two for AU men's soccer team in the St. Louis area.
In the first half, there were several scoring opportunities. Lindenwood-Belleville struck first in the first six minutes of play to take the early 1-0 lead.
The Lynx would add another goal seven minutes later in the 13
th minute to take a 2-0 advantage.
Asbury was able to cut into the deficit with a goal from
Noah Welch 90 seconds later to make it a 2-1 game.
However, Lindenwood-Belleville would answer right back in the 18
th minute with another score.
Just before halftime, the Lynx would add one more goal to take a 4-1 advantage into the locker room.
The Eagles only gave up one goal in the second half, but were unable to rally from a three-goal deficit in the first half.
Welch netted his second goal of the match in the 59
th minute to make it a 4-2 match. The senior now has three goals on the year and has scored at least one goal in the past two contests.
One minute later, AU reduced the deficit down to just one goal at 4-3 after
Isaac Amaya scored on a penalty kick.
Lindenwood-Belleville would score again 16 seconds later to push their lead back up to 5-3, providing three goals scored from both teams in two minutes.
Despite getting out-shot 12-3 in the opening half, Asbury posted eight shots in the second half. The Eagles finished the match with 11 shots as a team.
Welch led AU with four shots in total, while Amaya tallied two.
The Eagles will return to action on Saturday at Harris-Stowe State University at 2 PM.
