WILMORE, Ky. – The Asbury University men's soccer team fell 3-1 on Saturday evening in their 2019 home opening match to Trinity Christian College.
AU slips to 1-1 on the season and will be back in play at home on Thursday against Thomas More.
The Eagles took the early 1-0 advantage in the opening minutes of the first half as
Owyn Howard connected on a header into the back of the net off a free kick from
Noah Welch.
Howard has two goals already this season matching another goal he scored in the season opener at Oakland City.
AU had a few more opportunities to try and increase their advantage in the first half but were unsuccessful.
The Eagles defense did a good job containing the offensive attack from Trinity in the later stages of the first half as the Trolls made a push to try and even the match.
Asbury remained unscathed and carried their 1-0 lead into halftime.
However, things took a turn in the second half quickly. The Trolls would score twice on own goals from AU in the first 11 minutes of the half for a 2-1 lead.
The Eagles gathered some momentum late and tried to the even the score but missed on a couple of solid looks and were unable to find the back of the net.
Trinity Christian would score once more with 7:04 to go put the Trolls ahead 3-1 to seal the match.
Asbury posted 10 shots throughout the contest and
Trey Miller collected four saves at goalie.
