EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Asbury University men's soccer team came away with a 2-1 double overtime win at Oakland City on Monday afternoon to kick off their 2019 season. With the victory, Asbury begins the new year with a 1-0 record.
The match was moved from Oakland City to the Goebel Soccer Complex in Evansville due to heavy rain.
In the first half of the match, neither team could find the back of the net. The Mighty Oaks out-shot Asbury 7-6, but AU posted four shots on-goal in the opening half. Oakland City had three corner kicks early on, but the Eagles' defense kept the match scoreless.
Oakland City broke the tie in the second half with a goal in the 58
th minute to give the Mighty Oaks a 1-0 edge.
The Eagles responded in the 79
th minute with an equalizing goal from
Owyn Howard, as
Sam Henderson provided the assist.
After 90 minutes of action, the match was still even at 1-1.
In the second overtime period, Asbury found the back of the net.
Shooting high from 10 yards out,
Isaiah Okesson scored the game-winning goal in the 108th minute.
Brody Smith was rewarded with the assist on the goal.
AU finished with 14 shots in total, with seven shots landing on-goal.
Sam Henderson and
Owyn Howard each tallied three shots apiece, while
Noah Welch and
Micah Schneider recorded two shots each.
Asbury will return to action at home on Saturday against Trinity Christian College. The match is set to begin at 7:30 PM.
