WILMORE, Ky. – The Asbury University women's basketball team got back to their winning ways on Monday afternoon as they took down (RV) Grace 96-85 at the Luce Center.
Asbury pushes ahead to 13-2 on the year and improve to 6-1 in home games this season.
The Eagles were led by junior
Autumn Herriford, who posted a triple-double of 18 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists.
Grace jumped ahead after a strong opening period with quality outside shooting, leading 25-15. However, AU out-scored Grace 29-21 in the second frame as they began to find their groove on both ends of the floor.
The Eagles erased a double-digit deficit and cut the lead down to just two after a three-point shot from
Kelsey Johnson right before the end of the half. Grace held on to a 46-44 advantage at halftime.
AU came out swinging early on in the third period and started the half on an 11-4 run. Another three from Johnson pushed Asbury ahead 55-48.
Grace rallied back into the game and tied things up at 65-65. A three from
Sarah King at the horn put the Eagles up by a triple at 68-65 heading into the fourth.
Asbury dominated the opening minutes of the final period with great basketball on both ends, starting the quarter off on a 19-4 run to take an 87-69 lead. AU shot 60 percent from the floor in the quarter.
For the game, AU out-rebounded Grace 49-42.
Grace tired to get back into the game late, but the Eagles finished the game strong never letting the lead slip below eight points.
Kelsey Johnson led AU with 25 points and also brought in eight rebounds.
Jaclynn Ruble recorded 20 points and dished out six assists. Ruble knocked down five three-point field goals in the victory.
Zaria Napier collected nine points, while
Sarah King and
Sarah Dennison each scored eight points apiece. Napier posted 11 rebounds and Dennison totaled 12.
Asbury scored 40 points inside the paint and added 19 points off of turnovers.
Asbury is back in play on January 3 at Berea.
