WILMORE, Ky. – For the first time this season, the Asbury University women's basketball team came away with a loss. The Eagles dropped an 83-67 decision to Berea in non-conference play at the Luce Center on Saturday afternoon.
AU moves to 5-1 overall on the year with the loss.
Berea led 21-18 after the first period, and with a slow second quarter from the Eagles, extended their advantage out to 36-27 at halftime.
The Mountaineers stormed out to a 13-2 run to begin the third quarter and led by 20 points at 49-29. Asbury tried to chip away and reduce the lead down but were not able to get any closer than 11 points at 66-55 early in the fourth.
Berea pushed their lead back out to 15 three minutes later to preserve the victory.
The Mountaineers only shot 34 percent on the day, but shot 24-30 from the foul line and out-rebounded the Eagles 50-30.
The Eagles struggled from the three-point line throughout the afternoon, knocking down only 5-28 shooting attempts.
As a team, Asbury finished 26-69 from the field for 37 percent shooting. Asbury also shot 10-15 from the free-throw line.
Autumn Herriford and
Zaria Napier both led AU in scoring with 16 points. Herriford shot 6-14 from the field and Napier was 5-10.
Kelsey Johnson also finished in double figures scoring with 12 points. Freshman
Faith Osborne added nine, while
Jaclynn Ruble and
Amie Conley finished with eight and six points apiece. Ruble collected four assists in the loss.
Conley also dished out four assists and brought in five rebounds. Herriford also notched five rebounds
The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tenn. Tip-off is slated for 6 PM.
