WILMORE, Ky. – The Asbury University volleyball team fell in straight sets to IU East on Saturday afternoon at the Luce Center in River States Conference play. The Eagles lost the match 25-12, 25-18, 29-27, as their four-match winning streak comes to a close.
AU drops to 8-10 overall on the season and is now 5-4 in conference play.
It was a tough going early on in the opening set as nothing seemed to go right for the Eagles. IU East jumped out to a quick lead. Later on the Red Wolves led 18-12, and then won the final seven points to take the opening set.
Asbury got off to another slow start in the second set but played much better throughout the entirety of the set. The Eagles sliced the lead down to just one point at 12-11, but were unable to make it any closer as the Red Wolves took the set 25-18.
AU led for a good portion of the third set as both teams went back-and-forth. The Eagles would not go away quietly as they fought till the end, fighting off three match points, but IU East prevailed 29-27 to clinch the match.
The Eagles finished the match with 21 kills and a hitting percentage of .035. IU East posted 49 kills and held a .246 hitting percentage on Saturday.
Lizzy Rempel totaled five kills, while
Hailey Jordan and
Mari-Grace Alexander each added four kills apiece.
Jessie Sandefur led the defense with 23 digs. Jordan collected 10 assists and
Taegan Montgomery recorded six.
Bethany Laue and
Bethany Fye both registered two blocks each in the loss.
Asbury will be back in play at Kentucky State on Monday. The match is set for a 6 PM start.
