WILMORE, Ky. – The Asbury University volleyball team won its third straight match on Saturday afternoon as the Eagles were victorious over Rio Grande in River States Conference play. Asbury took the match 25-22, 25-13, 25-12.
AU improves to 7-9 on the year and is now 4-3 in league action.
After trailing 13-11 early on in the first set, AU got things going in a hurry by winning the next eight points to open up their lead for good.
The Eagles dominated the final two sets and totaled 36 kills for the day. Rio led 4-2 in the opening stage of the second set, but the Eagles' went on a 14-2 run to blow the game open with a commanding lead.
AU never trailed the rest of the way and a kill from
Mari-Grace Alexander sealed the win and the third consecutive sweep for the Eagles.
Asbury also posted a solid .233 hitting percentage for the afternoon.
Lizzy Rempel led the Eagles with 11 kills, while
Bethany Fye tabbed seven and
Hailey Jordan recorded six.
Jordan led AU with 19 assists and four service aces. Asbury did an excellent job all afternoon of placing their serves in tough spots for Rio, as they logged nine aces throughout the match.
Taegan Montgomery finished with 11 assists.
Jessie Sandefur registered 28 digs and
Kandace Eligio collected eight.
Fye had another big match up at the net with five blocks. The Eagles completed Saturday's match with nine blocks in total.
Mari-Grace Alexander and
Julia Thompson each added three blocks apiece.
The Eagles return to the court next Friday at home against Ohio Christian.
