Volleyball Tops CCU at Home in Four Sets

WILMORE, Ky. – After spending the entire month of September on the road, the Asbury University volleyball team made the most of their second home match of the year on Tuesday night.

The Eagles defeated Cincinnati Christian in four sets (25-20, 25-21, 19-25, 25-22) to win their first River States Conference match of the 2019 season.

Asbury improves to 4-8, (1-2, RSC) on the year with the victory.

AU got off to a quick start as they took the first two sets after collecting 16 kills in the first and 12 in the second.

Needing only one more set to get the sweep, CCU stormed back to win the third set as the Eagles were unable to maintain their momentum.

However, the Eagles regrouped nicely and rallied from a 22-20 deficit in the fourth set, winning the final five points of the set. A service ace from Hailey Jordan sealed the deal for Asbury.

The Eagles were led up front by senior Julia Thompson, who posted a team-high 15 kills in the win. As a team, Asbury collected 47 kills.

Mari-Grace Alexander also contributed with 10 kills and four blocks up at the net. Jordan recorded eight kills and Lizzy Rempel totaled six. Kenzie Harmon notched four kills and three block assists.

Jordan led the Eagles with 22 assists while Taegan Montgomery added 13. Senior Jessie Sandefur tacked on 37 digs to lead the Eagles' defense, while Charis Wieschaus notched eight digs.

Asbury will return to action at home on Saturday against RSC opponent IU Kokomo. The match is tabbed for a 12 PM start.
