WILMORE, Ky. — Asbury baseball (11-20, 6-7 CCS) battled back into the game midway through but could not overcome an early deficit and a late surge, falling 16-5 to Maryville (20-10, 5-5 CCS) on Friday evening at Cecil Zweifel Field.
Maryville struck quickly in the opening inning, plating four runs on a series of RBI hits to take early control. The Scots added three more runs over the next two frames, building a 7-0 lead before the Eagles found their footing.
Asbury got on the board in the fourth inning when CJ Hussey and Avery Hare connected for back-to-back doubles, with Hare driving in Hussey to cut into the deficit. The Eagles continued to chip away, adding single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, highlighted by Hank Burns reaching on an error to bring home a run and make it 7-3.
After Maryville extended its lead in the seventh, Asbury responded with its most productive inning of the night. CJ Hussey delivered an RBI double before Hare added a sacrifice fly, trimming the margin to 10-5 and giving the Eagles momentum heading into the late innings.
However, Maryville answered decisively. The Scots erupted for six runs in the ninth inning, capitalizing on walks, hit-by-pitches, and defensive miscues to put the game out of reach.
Andrew Billington led the Eagles offensively with a strong 3-for-4 performance at the plate, while Hussey added two hits and an RBI. Asbury totaled 12 hits on the night, with contributions scattered throughout the lineup.
Ryan Yates (4-3) took the loss on the mound after two innings of work. The Eagles utilized multiple arms out of the bullpen in an effort to slow the Maryville offense, which finished with 15 hits and 12 walks drawn.
Asbury looks ahead to tomorrow when they faceoff with Maryville for a Senior Day Saturday doubleheader, first pitch for 1 PM and Senior Day at 12:30 PM.
