Asbury Surrenders First Loss of Season; Capital Uses Late Inning Surge for Win

STORY - THE ESSENTIALS

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. — Asbury (3-1, 0-0 CCS) stayed within striking distance through seven innings, but a pair of late offensive outbursts from Capital (1-0, 0-0 OAC) turned a competitive game into a 21-6 setback for the Eagles in a nine-inning matchup Friday afternoon.

The Eagles jumped on the board in the bottom of the first inning. After Edison Burke's leadoff single and a fielding error extended the frame, Avery Hare drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in the game's first run and cut the early deficit to 4-1.

Asbury continued to battle in the early going. In the second inning, Burke doubled home Austin Akridge and later scored on an RBI single from Andrew Billington to draw the Eagles within one run at 4-3.

Capital pulled away with a big first and third inning, plating multiple runs to build momentum, and extended their lead with a two-run homer in the fourth.

The Eagles weren't done offensively. In the fourth, Cam Weaver delivered an RBI double to trim the lead to 8-4, and later in the seventh Asbury earned two more runs, a run-scoring single by Brady Robeson and an RBI knock from Levi Kelly to pull within 8-6.

However, Capital's bats erupted in the late innings, including a six-run eighth and a big ninth highlighted by a grand slam-like four-RBI homer that pushed the Comets' advantage.

Burke led the Asbury offense with two hits and two runs scored, while Billington added a pair of hits and Robeson drove in a run. Asbury finished with six runs on nine hits.

Adam Campbell shined on the mound in relief for Asbury, going 3.1 innings and allowing just one earned run.
