Asbury Slips in Series Opener to Belhaven; Weaver Two-Run Homer

STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
WILMORE, Ky.--- The Asbury baseball team (7-22, 1-12 CCS) produced eight hits and held Belhaven University (25-11, 11-5 CCS) scoreless for six consecutive innings, but the Eagles fell short to the Blazers in the Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) series opener on Thursday night in Wilmore, Ky., 5-2.

Belhaven scored two runs in each of the first two innings behind four hits and three Asbury errors, taking a 4-0 lead. The Blazers out-hit AU 10-8, and committed two errors while Asbury had four on the night.

Freshman Christian Ministries major Evan McClain, sophomore finance major Devin Walker, and sophomore biochemistry major Adam Thompson combined for six scoreless innings out of the AU bullpen. Walker had four strikeouts and no walks in three innings of work.

Asbury's offense struck in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out two-run home run over the left field wall from senior marketing major Cam Weaver, 4-2. The home run scored Ryder Bunfill who had singled earlier in the inning.

The Blazers added a run in the ninth on three free-passes, and then got three consecutive outs in the ninth after Quinn Nobles and Cayden Perry each collected singles to lead off the last inning.

Kaden Dugle and Bryce Hayden each had two hits for Asbury, marking Dugle's seventh mult-hit game this season.

STORY - QUOTE
"Our bullpen gave us a chance in this game and I'm really proud of them for stepping in like they did. We put ourselves in a chance to make something happen late. Belhaven is a really strong team, we look forward to tomorrow."
Manny Cervantes | Asbury Head Coach
