WILMORE, Ky. --- The Asbury women's basketball team (15-7, 12-1 CCS) captured a new program record 12th straight win on Wednesday night, pulling away late from Maryville College (9-13, 8-5 CCS) 63-52. The previous mark of 11 straight was set by the 2011-2012 and 2023-2024 women's teams.
Asbury was led in scoring today for the third time in as many games by senior multi-media journalism major
Haleigh Releford. Releford posted 16 points, seven rebounds, and a team-high five steals now averaging 4.6 steals a game in her last eight.
AU was paced in scoring by sophomore elementary education major
Emily Sizemore and sophomore biology major
Juleigh Anne Tucker. Sizemore had a well-rounded statline adding 11 points, five rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Tucker rained in four 3 PT's to total 12 points.
Camryn Preston poured in seven points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to round out AU's top performers.
Asbury out-scored the Scots 16-13 in the first quarter and finished dead-even at 19 apiece in the second to take a three point lead into the break. AU was able to extend its lead by one in the third taking a 48-44 lead. The Eagles defense held strong in the fourth holding MC to just eight and capturing a 63-52 win.
The Eagles had the slight edge in the paint scoring 24 points, while MC scored 22.
Maryville was led in scoring by Ella Haney's 15 points and five rebounds. Haney was paced in scoring by Halle Kitchen's nine off of the bench.
The Scots edged out the Eagles in the rebounding department 34-33. MC grabbing 10 ORB and AU 16.
AU finished 24-74 (32%) from the field while the Eagles defense held MC to 21-56 (38%). AU hit on eight three-pointers tonight (four from
Juleigh Anne Tucker), Maryville draining five.
Asbury committed 13 turnovers on 10 Scots steals, Maryville committed 27 turnovers on 18 steals for the Eagles. Asbury turned the turnovers into 27 points, MC turning Eagle turnovers into eight. AU has now turned over their opponents double-digit times in 20 of their 22 games.
Asbury scored 21 bench points, while MC put up 18.
There was just four lead changes and two tie scores throughout the game.
Maryville drops to 8-5 and fourth in the conference, while Asbury improves their standing to 12-1 in the CCS and first place.
The game was the last between the Scots and Eagles on the year, AU sweeping the season series 2-0.
"Tonight's game was a great test for us. The team is very happy to set a new record for consecutive wins, but they also were the first to tell me that they are not satisfied with where they are currently. To be honest, I don't think they care about, or even think about how many wins they have in a row. They want to win every game and they always focus on the game they're playing at that time and when it's over, they only think about the next one. Our mindset is simply "One more…"
