JACKSON, Miss.--- The Asbury women's soccer team (11-7-3, 4-3-1 CCS) saw its impressive postseason run come to a close on Saturday afternoon, falling 2-1 to Belhaven University (14-4-3, 6-1-1 CC) in the Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) Championship in Jackson, Miss.
Belhaven scored first in the 27th minute off a penalty kick to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead, then doubled its advantage just 10 minutes later to go up 2-0 before haltime.
The Eagles battled back in the second half, and junior exercise science major
Maggie Perry broke through in the 87th minute to pull AU within one at 2-1. Despite the late push, Asbury couldn't find the equalizer as Belhaven held on for the win.
Sophomore sport management major
Peyton Steiniger, Asbury's goalkeeper, recorded nine saves while facing 15 total shots from Belhaven.
Hannah Muncie led the Eagles with three shots on goal, while Perry and
Anna Sparks each added one.Â
All five of Asbury's shots came in the second half, while Belhaven tallied 15 shots overall with 11 on target. The match featured one yellow card, issued to Belhaven in the 89th minute.
The Eagles will look toward an upcoming announcement of playing in the National Christian College Athletics Association (NCCAA) Mideast Regional.Â
