WILMORE, Ky. --- Asbury women's soccer (0-3-1) took the field Saturday to face Anderson University (3-1-1) in an afternoon tilt. In a closely contested match, Anderson was able to secure the win with a goal in the 86th minute, tallying the score at 1-2.
Sophomore
Hannah Muncie had the lone goal on the night, set up off the foot of
Caroline Absher. Absher has now collected assists on both goals of the season for the Eagles. The goal by Muncie was her first on the still young season.
Asbury was led on the night by
Hannah Muncie and
Anna Sparks. Muncie would record a game high seven SH and three SOG. Sparks collected three SH, landing two SOG respectively.
The Asbury offense wasted no time putting an attack together and in the seventh minute they found their only goal of the night off the foot of
Hannah Muncie, set up by teammate
Caroline Absher. The goal got the Eagles on the board early with a 1-0 lead.
Absher got into the mix herself in the ninth minute leading an offensive attack, putting a SOG that was saved by the Anderson keeper, Adrienne Weyers, to keep the game at 1-0.Weyers had an impressive six sves on the night.
For the next 10 minutes Asbury strung four shots, coming from
Maggie Perry,
Reese Bolton,
Anna Sparks, and a SOG attempt by
Hannah Muncie that couldn't find net. The match stayed at 1-0.
Anderson knotted things up in the 26th minute with a goal off the foot of Montez. Asbury performed well on defense the entire night and gave the Ravens trouble with only two shots on the game.
Asbury had the only other shot recorded of the half in the 32nd minute from
Caroline Absher. The rest of the half there wasn't much action and the game went into the half tied up at one apiece.
Things got interesting in the 54th minute when AU was rewarded with a penalty kick.
Hannah Muncie took the kick for the Eagles and put a nice swing on the ball, but was miraculously saved by Weyers, and the game stayed at one-all.
Asbury put very high pressure on the Anderson defense in the next 20 minutes, but couldn't string together a goal.
Deidra Long,
Maci Muncie,
Hannah Muncie, and
Payton Ardery all put shots together during that span.
Anderson collected the eventual game winning goal in the 86th minute with Montez once again, making things 1-2, where the game ended at.
The Eagles seemingly dominated the entire game with many opportunities, but were only able to find one goal. The Eagles recorded 18 shots (seven on goal) compared to Anderson's eight (four on goal). The Eagles took an incredible nine corner kicks on the night, while Anderson took three.
Asbury moves to 0-3-1 on the season, looking to bounce back this Wednesday in Wilmore against Berea College.
